Toilet Paper Creativity

My parents have asked that I make them a toilet paper roll cover and I now find myself scouring the Internet for a knitting pattern that's not reminiscent of something an 85-year-old cat lady with a doll obsession would put in her bathroom.  Thus far, I'm having little luck.  However, I did stumble upon the artwork of Anastasia Elias.  In her series Rouleaux, she creates miniature scenes from toilet paper rolls.

Dream for an Insomniac

Yesterday, I accompanied Rachel to a charitable book fair and found a poster for one of my favorite movies.  It was kismet...or something.  I credit Dream for an Insomniac with igniting my love for CAKE.

Trolls Are the New Vampires

Oh my goodness, this looks sooo ridiculous!  And yet, I want to see it!  We can thank Norway for TrollHunter.

And let it be noted that I've been to Norway and have in fact seen a troll.  It was inanimate, but still...

Elephant Sucker

Today, I discovered Elephant magazine, published in The Netherlands.  They had me at "elephant," but it's about "contemporary art and visual culture," not elephants.  I didn't actually read the content of Issue #6, but the pictures were pretty. :)

I did notice an article about Coralie Bickford-Smith, who designs pretty book covers for Penguin Books.  I'm a sucker for pretty book covers.

Lost Girl Is Found

I don't watch a lot of television, at least not mainstream television.  My newest obsession is a little Canadian show called Lost Girl.  Yes, yes, I know the "fae" thing is waaaaaay overdone, but I don't care.  The show's entertaining, the stars are hot (and can act!), and major points for the killer soundtrack!  It kind of reminds me of the cheesy early days of Buffy.  Sadly, if you're not in Canada, you're kinda screwed, unless you're sneaky like me. ;)  But GOOD news for the U.S.!  Syfy bought rights to the first two seasons (season 2 airs in CA in the fall).

Now for some music from the show, including phender, You Say Party, The Kills, and Neverending White Lights.

Kozy Finds Home

Guess who finally got her kindle kozy?  My aunt Joanne.  Better late than never!  And lucky for me, she didn't have a cover for it. :)

Mesh Produce Tote

My lastest project is complete!  It's a mesh tote knit with cotton yarn that I intend to use for produce.  I found the pattern in Stitch 'N Bitch Superstar Knitting: Go Beyond the Basics, but you can also find it at The Purl Bee with some very nice detailed pictures.

Sometimes I like to play a little game called "How Many Things Can Emily Teach Herself In One Day?"  I taught myself how to knit an I-cord and crochet seams in one afternoon.  Thank goodness for home Internet because I need access to plenty of visual aids and privacy to curse like a sailor.

The body of the bag is Lion Brand Cotton Ease in "stone" and to get a punch of color I chose Lily Sugar'n Cream in "grape."  The mesh is a little smaller because I used a US size 8 needle instead of 9.  If I attempt the mesh tote again, I think I'll track down my US 9 and maybe increase the dimensions.  I've also thought about adding some embellishments to this tote, such as a nice red rose.  Knitting flowers can be something else new to learn. :)

Oh... hello blog.

Today I was shamed into posting by a five-year-old. Well, sort of. It went something like this:

Via Empire: Online. ::swoon:: Magneto
In an effort to be a productive version of a human being, I bought myself a new purse-sized notebook, this one from the clearance section of Borders featuring images from The Simple Art of Sumi-e by Takumasa Ono. Last week I had it out while I was baby-sitting my new charges, Sarah and Rachel, so that I could jot down the topics their Mom had asked me to review with them. Rachel asked if she could look at it and so read the to-do list on the first page, from 25 April 2011, where most things were crossed off except for at the very bottom where it said "BLOG." She asked if I'd done it yet so I could cross it off and I said no. Today she asked me again. I don't want to have to tell her no a third time.

In my defense, I've been busy. Like, legitimately busy and not just putzing on Facebook or playing casual games. So busy that I'm two episodes behind on Doctor Who and have yet to read a single sentence (much less an article) in the new issue of Vanity Fair. There have been birthdays and baby-sitting and gardening and family time and obsessing over Michael Fassbender. But the same notebook also features a list of possible blog topics.

So I'll try to do better. Just don't be surprised if I, you know... don't.
